The term was first formally coined in 1964, when Pierre Cardin launched his "Space Age" line. The Space Age was a universal concept in design, spanning from fashion to architecture and beyond. ![]() Several innovations began as NASA technologies, like memory foam, LED lighting, freeze dried foods, and even the internet. Influenced by 'Populuxe' architecture, it is an example of the Mid-century modern design movement later to become known as 'Googie'. Coinciding with the start of the Cold War back in the 1940s, Atomic Age design looked to the future, full of speculation, wonder and, yes, fear about technology, space and the role of mankind in all of this. This era saw incredible innovation in rocketry, materials science, and other areas, much of which eventually trickled down into mainstream use in other fields. The Theme Building is a structure at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), considered an architectural example of the Space Age design style. Atomic Age design is a highly imaginative movement that plays on these themes of nuclear energy, atomic science, and space exploration.
